Name Change for the Center for Cardiovascular Wellness: Now The Dick Butkus Center for Cardiovascular Wellness (Butkus Center)

ORANGE, Calif. Sept. 4, 2007-- The Center for Cardiovascular Wellness, an Orange County California based non-profit organization, announced today that it has officially changed its name to The Dick Butkus Center for Cardiovascular Wellness.

The name change was implemented to celebrate and honor the Center’s newest board member, football legend and philanthropist, Mr. Dick Butkus.

Mr. Butkus, a 2-time All-American at Illinois and 9-time NFL Pro-bowler, was voted into the Football Hall of Fame on the 1st ballot in 1978. The Center is proud to bear his name and have him on its board.

• 325,000 American adults die each year due to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD). SCD is the largest cause of natural death in the U.S. and it is responsible for half of all heart disease deaths.

Approximately 425 young Americans die suddenly and unexpectedly each month due to Cardiac Arrhythmia Syndromes – with a greater incidence of death among young athletes between the ages of 6 to 18, and college athletes.

• The leading cause of death in the line of duty for the American firefighter, police officer, or emergency medical technicians is Sudden Cardiac Arrest.  Heart disease is the number one killer of American first responder personnel.

Through its one of a kind Cardiac Screening Program, The Dick Butkus Center for Cardiovascular Wellness offer the community; safe, non-invasive and painless screenings that make it possible to detect risk factors associated with sudden cardiac arrest and other forms of heart disease before it is too late.

Since its inception in March of 2005, the center has provided cardiac screening to over 1500 individuals from Orange Country and surrounding communities.  Screenings are offered for a nominal donation or at no cost and are made possible through the philanthropic support and generosity of its donors.

The center also offers patients and their families’ access to educational programs and support resources to empower them with the tools to prevent, delay or even reverse the onset of cardiovascular disease.

The Center is guided by a vision to transform the landscape of cardiovascular disease in Orange County and eventually throughout the nation, by supplying the tools to identify high risk individuals and access to the resources to help save their lives.

The Center’s signature Cardiac Screening Program is available on-site at The Center’s facilities or can be offered off-site at events, community centers, athletic programs, corporations, medical offices, or almost anywhere else.
